grant from Health Net to open Family Clinic in Yucaipa

Goal of Health Net grant is to improve access to children’s healthcare
YUCAIPA , CA - In an effort to meet the healthcare needs of children and families in the Yucaipa-Calimesa area, Redlands Community Hospital has partnered with Health Net of California to open a Family Clinic in Yucaipa at 11985 Fourth Street, #117, one block north of Yucaipa Boulevard. Clinic services also will be available to people in neighboring communities, including Banning and Beaumont.

Set to open March 1, 2003, the first year start-up costs for the clinic have been made possible through a $200,000 grant awarded to the hospital by Health Net. Through the Health Net Healthy Families Outreach Grant program, Health Net’s grant to Redlands Community Hospital will be used to expand health care services for low-income and uninsured children and families, including both Medi-Cal for children and Healthy Families program enrollees.

With the potential increase of eligible children and services, funds will be used to hire clinical staff, a case manager for tracking and follow-up with "high risk" clients, purchase additional medical supplies and equipment, and expand clinic-based services in Yucaipa and surrounding communities. The hospital is already involved in outreach through the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District in providing support for perinatal health, nutritional and parenting training, and case management in the Pregnant Teen Program.

"A variety of risk factors are a daily reality in the lives of many students in the area," said Cheryl Acob, Family Clinic Manager and Nurse Practitioner at the hospital’s two other school-based Family Clinics in the Redlands Unified School District. They are located at Lugonia Elementary School in Redlands and at Mentone Elementary School. Acob will oversee this third clinic, which is an expansion of this program, however, the Yucaipa clinic will be located independent of a school site. Staff is currently being recruited and trained for the Yucaipa clinic.

"Various socio-economic conditions can threaten the health status of students and their families. Other barriers to seeking appropriate healthcare services include lack of transportation, limited childcare, language differences, limited community resources, inability to read, low self-confidence, and cultural or ethnic diversity," said Acob. "With Health Net's generous grant, we are hoping to support these families by providing increased services and further expand patient access."
