Bobbie Husted accepts the Alice Raumin Award for Nursing Excellence 2003

It is a commonly known fact that nurses possess at least a few of the following characteristics: integrity, high professional standards, compassion, patient advocacy, loyalty to the staff, loyalty to the hospital, enthusiasm and energy.

At Redlands Community Hospital we are fortunate to have many nurses who not only possess a few of these qualities, but all of them!

This set of criteria is the basis for the Alice Raumin Award. This year's winner is Bobbie Husted, a nurse who has worked for the hospital for nearly 15 years.

"I believe Bobbie Husted represents the type of nurse RCH had in mind when the Alice Raumin Award for Nursing Excellence was established," said Hospital President Jim Holmes. "Bobbie provides superior patient care and demonstrates the very qualities that are associated with this award. I believe Alice would have very much approved of her winning this award."

RCH has a strategic initiative titled "Professional Practice and Professional Role Reinforcement."

Madonna Coughenour, Vice President of Nursing, said that Bobbie models the role of the professional RN every day.

She takes self direction as she identifies the needs of the patients and takes whatever action is necessary to meet those goals. Bobbie incorporates the use of theory into her routine as she assists with appropriate placement of patients. She cares for her patients in a compassionate and comforting manner and consistently ensures all caregivers are aware of the plans for her patients.

These are just a few of the reasons Bobbie Husted is the most recent recipient of the Alice Raumin Award for Nursing Excellence.

A plaque with her name and picture on it will be hung in her department. In addition, her name will go on the hospital plaque, which will be displayed in the lobby. She also received a check for $1,500.

The award is named after Alice Raumin, a nurse who began her career in 1963. Alice started out as a night nurse and progressed into various management positions and became Vice President of Nursing in 1976. She held that position for 18 years until she was diagnosed with advanced cancer. She died on Christmas Day that same year, but her spirit lives on in many ways. It was for this reason the award was created in 1995 and named in her honor. Past recipients in order by date are: Jim Yazzie (ICU), Maureen Harsch (Med/Surg), Eileen Verosik (ED), Maude Umbach (Surgery), Fran Spoelstra (OB), Ana Campos (ICU), Lois Campbell (Behavioral Medicine) and Bonnie Hallberg (Post Partum).
