At the RCH Employees Award
Luncheon on October 28, 2004, Holly Olson, RN, was awarded the
prestigious Alice Raumin Award for Nursing Excellence. Every year,
nurses vote for the best of their best to receive this award, which
is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Alice Raumin and the ideals of
patient care she represented. Alice always had in her heart a
special place for the bedside nurse.
Mrs. Raumin began her
nursing career at RCH in 1963. She retired in September 1994 after
she was diagnosed with advanced cancer; she died on Christmas Day
that year.
The criteria for this award
is based on the traits that were modeled by Mrs. Raumin in her
professional role and the compassionate manner with which she dealt
with patients and staff alike. The following traits characterized
her service: integrity, high professional standards, compassion,
patient advocacy, enthusiasm and energy, and loyalty to staff and
the hospital.
Mrs. Olson began working at
RCH in 1990. She had previously worked as a respiratory therapist
before becoming an RN. She continued her education and become a
certified Critical Care Nurse. She worked in our ICU until September
2004, at which time she transferred to One Day Surgery. She had
previously worked at Loma Linda University Medical Center, the VA
Hospital, and even served as a First Lieutenant with the Air Force
Reserve during Desert Storm.
Co-workers who nominated
Mrs. Olson stated: "She is not only very good with patients and
families clinically, but helps them deal with the emotional and
social issues related to a patient's care. She is considered a good
friend and supportive to others." A patient's family recently
sent a complimentary note stating: "Her personality exemplifies
the real love that she gives to her patients and families."
A native of Boulder,
Colorado, Holly came here to attend an Adventist college. She has
been married to her husband Zen for 19 years and they have several
pets (dogs and cats). Holly thought, "Maybe because we have
never had children, God gave me all these patients to share my love
with and the time and patience to give them a little extra
touch."
