Barbara Walker, RN. |
October 27 is a day Barbara
Walker, RN, will never forget. Surrounded by more than 250
co-workers, family members, volunteers, retirees and dignitaries,
Barbara was completely caught off guard when it was announced she
had been chosen as the 2005 Alice Raumin Award recipient.
Barbara began her 18-year
career with the hospital as a volunteer. She graduated from the
College of the Desert with a nursing degree while working at RCH.
Barbara now works in the Hospice Department. She shares her love of
the hospice with her husband, who happens to be a hospice chaplain.
The Alice Raumin nursing
award recipient is selected from nominations from peers. These
nominations are then considered carefully by a committee of nurse
managers who take into consideration the characteristics this award
was founded upon. These characteristics include: integrity, high
professional standards, compassion, patient advocacy, loyalty to
staff and the hospital, enthusiasm and energy.
"Barbara's co-workers,
as well as her managers, state that she always performs her job with
the utmost integrity while maintaining high professional
standards," said Hospital President Jim Holmes. "I had the
privilege of working with Alice Raumin, therefore, because of these
type of comments, I believe Alice would agree, that Barbara is so
deserving of this award."
One co-worker stated,
"Attending to the dying and their families is a difficult job
that can be both heart-breaking and emotionally overwhelming.
Barbara does this on a daily basis, always advocating for her
patients while assisting their families as they cope with the loss
of a loved one."
Barbara has continually
demonstrated that she is worthy of the Alice Raumin Award by giving
herself unselfishly, working long and extended hours, serving
multiple roles, including nurse, advisor, advocate and friend. She
is a loyal co-worker and loyal to RCH and the community.
The Alice Raumin award was
created in 1995. Alice was a nurse who began her career in 1963 as a
night nurse and progressed into various management positions. She
became Vice President of Nursing in 1976. She held that position for
18 years until her death on Christmas day in 1994.
Past recipients in order by
date are: Jim Yazzie (ICU), Maureen Harsch (Med/Surg), Eileen
Verosik (ED), Maude Umbach (Surgery), Fran Spoelstra (OB), Ana
Campos (ICU), Lois Campbell (Behavioral Medicine), Bonnie Hallberg
(Post Partum), Bobbie Husted (Case Management) and Holly Olson (Case
Management).
